Gori University is the only accredited public university in the Gori Region and serves approximately 1,400 mainly low-income students from the city of Gori and the surrounding villages, including ethnic Georgian villages in South Ossetia. The University has three faculties- Humanities, Education and Science, and Business and Economics. 101 academic and 92 administrative staff work at the University, making Gori University one of the largest employers in the region.

During Russian military operations in the Gori Region, including airstrikes and the subsequent occupation, University buildings were heavily damaged. The Georgian government has pledged to rehabilitate the University's buildings and infrastructure, but many students will be unable to continue their studies because of tuition costs. Without this main source of income, the University faces a budget shortfall.

As of Fall 2008 registration, nearly half of Gori University students could not pay their tuition.
